Most people who see the name for the first time think it sounds Italian. Or maybe French. Something European — a word that belongs on a watch dial or a leather-goods label. They're not wrong that it sounds that way. They're just wrong about where it comes from.
Migatte (身勝手) is a Japanese word. It means doing things entirely on your own terms — acting by your own rules, moving for yourself without apology. The characters break down to 身 (mi — one's own self, one's body) and 勝手 (katte — as one pleases, on one's own accord). Together: self-first. Unapologetic. Done on your terms or not at all.
That gap — between what the name sounds like and what it actually means — is not an accident. It's the point.
Where we're from.
Migatte is a Vancouver-based Canadian startup. We build accessories for people who collect and wear the pieces that matter to them — the drops worth waiting for, the collabs worth owning, the objects that carry more meaning than their price tag suggests.
Vancouver is a city that sits at the intersection of East and West — Japanese and European aesthetics have coexisted here for over a century, in the architecture, the food, the culture. The name Migatte lives in that same intersection: a Japanese word in a Western package, immediately readable to everyone, fully understood by almost nobody. Until now.
We're a startup in the truest sense — lean, fast, and focused on one thing at a time. Right now, that one thing is the AP × Swatch Royal Pop.
Why the Royal Pop.
The AP × Swatch Royal Pop is the most talked-about watch collab of the decade. It carries Royal Oak DNA, it retails at $400 CAD, and it arrives in a box with no way to wear it on your wrist. That's the gap Migatte fills — purpose-built silicone straps that turn the pocket watch into the wristwatch it was always going to become. No modifications, no permanent changes, reversible in seconds.
We chose the Royal Pop not because it was convenient, but because it was the right product — underserved, over-loved, and sitting in a drawer for thousands of people who deserved better than that. The aftermarket was empty. The demand was obvious. We moved.
What we're building.
Migatte exists to make people look their best in the things they already love. Not by replacing those things — by completing them. The right strap on the right watch. The right accessory on the right collab. Products that understand the object they're built for, rather than generic accessories that treat every watch the same.
The Royal Pop Edit is the first chapter. More products, more collabs, more drops are coming — each one purpose-built, each one earned. We don't ship until it's right. We don't add colourways until the quality justifies them. We don't expand until we've owned the thing we started.
That's Migatte. A Vancouver startup. A Japanese word. A product philosophy that starts and ends with the same idea: do it on your terms, or don't do it at all.
